The best advice I can give to new Mines' students is:

1)  Have an outlet.  You need something to do besides math and science.  Maybe it's video games, or varsity, club or intramural sports, or band, or choir, or some other club or . . .

2) Park your pride, and your embarassment.  It's ok to be proud of the fact you've been admitted and are coming to CSM.  But don't think you can get through CSM by yourself.  You need study groups.  Don't be too proud, or too ashamed, to visit faculty and TA office hours.  We're here to help.  If you already knew it all, you wouldn't be here.  One-on-one interactions are much different than classroom questions and answers.  If you come to office hours, or make another appointment to see us, we'll help you out.  But you need to come in first.

Transferring From Mines

Annually, a sizeable number of students consider transferring from their college/university. Of those who consider transferring, a considerable number will. In fact, 1 in 3 students will transfer - nationally - as reported by the New York Times (2010).

The reason(s) for transferring vary. Finances, curriculum, career ambitions, and/or family demands often contribute. These reason are tangible and easily identifiable. Other reasons may be less identifiable and more subjective; maybe the school just doesn't "feel right" or "it's not the right fit".

Mines is a perfect fit for many students, but not for all.

If you are considering a depature from Mines, we can help.

We provide private consultation in choosing whether or not to transfer.

Our office will not attempt to persuade you to stay - nor will we push you out the door.

The process of transferring is complex and multi-faceted. Inherently, the process involves your departure from CSM while you research, apply, and pursue another institution. The transfer process is seasoned with many logistical steps, social & curricular ramifications, and personal challenges.
