Faculty Recommendations

Todd Ruskell, Physics

The best advice I can give to new Mines' students is:

1)  Have an outlet.  You need something to do besides math and science.  Maybe it's video games, or varsity, club or intramural sports, or band, or choir, or some other club or . . .

2) Park your pride, and your embarassment.  It's ok to be proud of the fact you've been admitted and are coming to CSM.  But don't think you can get through CSM by yourself.  You need study groups.  Don't be too proud, or too ashamed, to visit faculty and TA office hours.  We're here to help.  If you already knew it all, you wouldn't be here.  One-on-one interactions are much different than classroom questions and answers.  If you come to office hours, or make another appointment to see us, we'll help you out.  But you need to come in first.

Meet our Workshop Facilitators

Allen Thomas

Calculus I & II

My name is Allen Thomas III and yes I am tall (6'6").  I am the oldest of three brothers with one going to college this year and my youngest brother is a junior in high school.  This will be my second semester as a Calculus Facilitator and I am a Junior currently working towards my bachelors in Environmental Engineering.  Currently I am hoping to get into the 5 year combined Masters program and obtain my Doctorate some time in the future.  While I do not play any sports for the school, I do participate in almost all of the Intramural sports, particularly basketball, ultimate, and disc golf.  I am an avid Rockies, Nuggets and Duke fan and also enjoy watching the Tennessee Titans.  I enjoy reading a good book while also getting outside and doing almost anything. I have played basketball and soccer in three different countries since I have been on multiple mission trips to Mexico, Guatemala, and Zambia.  I do enjoy travelling though you will not catch me watching the travel channel for my TV is tuned solely to ESPN.

Heather Henkel

Calculus I & II

My name is Heather Henkel. I am 6' 1" so not as tall as Allen but I'm at least giving him a run for his money! This is my first semester as a calculus facilitator and I am really excited! I am from Wisconsin. I am a junior and studying to be a chemical engineer. I play rugby for Mines and I am also involved in greek life; I am in Alpha Phi. I love playing IM sports, I typically play every one except soccer. My favorite IM sport is definitely volleyball! I also love to snowboard.

Harrison Neal

Chemistry I & II

My name is Harrison Neal and I am a junior seeking a degree in Chemistry at Mines. I do have plans for graduate school and possibly getting a Doctorate but am unsure of what field of chemistry I would prefer. This is my first semester facilitating the General Chemistry I workshop and have worked as a General Chemistry II teaching assistant in the past. I am part of the Mines marching band playing the trombone. This works well for me because I love football and won't miss a Mines game, GO OREDIGGERS! I also enjoy some good rock music and playing pool.

Francisco Delgadillo

Chemistry I & II

My name Francisco Delgadillo and currently a Junior here at Mines and working to get my Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and maybe a minor in explosives engineering. This will be my first year as a AEW facilitator but I have prior experience as a lab coordinator and TA in high school. I am a very athletic person. I enjoy working out, whether it be lifting weights, running, or swimming. I did cross country, wrestling and track back in high school. Whenever I have down time I usually just spend it with my friends doing anything fun, doesn't matter if it is playing video games or hiking.

Skylar Huzyk

Physics I

My name is Skylar Huzyk (though I go by Skye) and I’m currently a sophomore working towards an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering.  I took a bit of a different route to get to Mines.  This is actually my second bachelor’s degree; my first was a BA in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Santa Fe.  At St. John’s, I was a TA for two years for a class focusing on the history and philosophy of science, and loved every minute of it.  After graduation I thought I wanted to be a high school teacher, and so I worked at a high school for a year and a half; however, that experience mostly reminded me why, at 18, I had wanted to get out of high school so badly in the first place.  Having realized that I needed to find a different career path, I started looking into engineering, and now I’m here!  In my free time I read avidly (usually philosophers and other dead white men, but there’s nothing like a good trashy mystery novel), and I love to hike, backpack, swing dance, and cook.

        Ryan Crisp & Connor McDonald

        Physics II & Statics

My name is Ryan Crisp and I am a senior in the Engineering Physics Program at Mines. I am also doing a 5-year combined program in Applied Physics to get my master's degree one year after I get my bachelor's degree. My main focus is on solar cell technology; I completed an REU in Norway researching Zinc oxide nanorods used in organic solar cells. This is my third semester facilitating the Physics I workshop and my fifth semester as a tutor. I run on Mines' cross-country and track teams mainly competing in the 800 meter and one mile runs. I also enjoy a good game of chess and cheesy Sci-Fi books when I am not solving physics problems.
